A Big Step Forward: “Transforming” Dallas
In May, Oregon Main Street approved the Dallas Downtown Association’s application to step up to the Transforming Downtown level. In the announcement, program coordinator Sheri Stewart said, “We are pleased to welcome the Dallas Downtown Association at the Transforming Downtown level of the Oregon Main Street Network. We have been working with them to build their organizational capacity for a few years at the Exploring Downtown level. They have a dedicated core of volunteers working to revitalize downtown Dallas. We are especially happy with their efforts to build partnerships with the City of Dallas and community organizations.”
Oregon Main Street is part of the Heritage Programs of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. The program is designed to assist with the revitalization of traditional downtowns and historic commercial districts, promote economic development, and encourage historic preservation. The program uses an approach that advocates a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment, and the rebuilding of central business districts based on their assets, unique architecture, personal service, local ownership and entrepreneurship, and a sense of community.
